Why It Matters
This exercise builds fretting hand finger independence and strength. Legato runs are fundamental to fluid phrasing, speed, and clean transitions between strings.
How to Practice
- 1Pre-plant both fingers before picking — the pull-off receiving finger must already be in place.
- 2Pull your fretting finger slightly sideways (toward the floor) rather than straight off, snap-sounding the lower note clearly.
- 3Keep both notes equal in volume: the pulled note must ring as loudly as the picked note.
Tips & Techniques
- •Exaggerate the sideways pull to match the volume of picked notes.
- •Keep idle fingers hovering close to the fretboard to minimize unnecessary movement.
- •Isolate and slow down the direction change at the bottom string (A→D) to keep timing even.
