Mini Arpeggio – Em7
A compact three-string Em7 arpeggio sweep: down from the A string through D and G, hammer-on at the top, pull-off, then sweep back up. One clean cycle per bar — the foundation of sweep picking phrasing.
Tablature
First few measures of the exercise.
How to Practice
- 1Sweep down through strings 5→4→3 in one continuous pick motion — not three separate strokes.
- 2At the G string (fret 9) immediately hammer onto fret 12, then pull-off back to fret 9.
- 3Reverse the pick direction and sweep up through strings 3→4→5 to complete the cycle.
- 4Lift each fretting finger right after it sounds so notes do not bleed into each other.
- 5Start slow — the aim is one smooth, even-volume cycle before adding speed.
Tips & Techniques
- •The pick should feel like it's falling through the strings on the way down, not hitting each one individually.
- •Pre-plant the hammer-on finger before you reach the G string so there's no hesitation at the top.
- •The up sweep is usually weaker than the down — give it extra attention at slow tempos.
- •If any note is noticeably louder, adjust pick angle or depth on that string.
- •Once the cycle is clean, try chaining it: two cycles per bar at half the BPM.

Sweep Picking Motion Drill – 3 Strings
Pure right-hand motion drill across G, B, and high e strings. All notes are muted — the goal is to train the sweeping wrist movement and pick-landing technique before adding fretting. Down sweep follows the natural gravity of the pick through the strings; up sweep uses a controlled return stroke.
Sweep Picking Motion Drill – 6 Strings
Full six-string sweep motion drill. All notes are muted — the entire focus is on training the pick to flow continuously from the low E string to the high e and back in one uninterrupted stroke. The wider range exposes weaknesses in the turn-around and in maintaining even volume across all strings.
3-String Sweep Synchronization
Clean 3-string sweep picking arpeggios focusing on right-left hand coordination. Am, C, and Dm triad shapes ascending and descending with one note per string.
5-String Sweep Cascades
Extended 5-string arpeggio sweep patterns. Am and Dm shapes across strings 5-1 with hammer-on turnaround at the top. Builds endurance and cross-string muting discipline.
