Improv Prompts — Easy
Improvise over a backing track while adhering to a single, rotating creative constraint.
Backing track required
This exercise is designed to be practiced over a backing track or drone. Without one, you lose the harmonic context that makes the exercise effective — pick any backing track in the key of your choice and keep it looping throughout the session.
Why This Exercise Matters
Random constraints force you to break out of habitual playing patterns. By imposing artificial limitations (like playing only on two strings or avoiding certain rhythms), you are forced to discover new pathways and creative solutions on the spot.
How to Practice
- 1Start improvising freely over a backing track or drone.
- 2When a prompt appears on screen, immediately alter your playing to follow that specific constraint.
- 3When the prompt changes, transition your playing to the new rule without stopping.
Tips & Techniques
- •Commit fully to the constraint, even if it feels uncomfortable or unnatural at first.
- •If a prompt is challenging, drastically reduce the number of notes you play to give yourself processing time.
