Why It Matters
This exercise develops picking hand efficiency through directional economy picking. By allowing the pick to continue its path through adjacent strings rather than forcing strict alternate strokes, you minimize wasted physical movement, increase potential playing speed, and build a smooth, sweeping cross-string motion.
How to Practice
- 1Let the pick continue in the same direction when crossing onto an adjacent string.
- 2Use a tiny sweeping motion for sequential notes falling on adjacent strings.
- 3Maintain uniform tone, volume, and metronomic timing on every note.
Tips & Techniques
- •Do not force alternate picking — allow the string changes to dictate your stroke direction.
- •Keep your picking stroke compact and close to the strings to maximize efficiency.
- •Practice slowly to coordinate the exact moment of pick crossing with your fretting hand.
