Pattern B: Chuck Groove

Pattern C: Syncopated Push
↓––↑↓––↑
How to Practice
- 1These patterns use gaps (skipped strums) to create rhythmic groove — your arm never stops moving, but some strums don't hit the strings.
- 2Pattern A is the most common rock pattern. Pay attention to the accented beats 2 and 4.
- 3Pattern B introduces a muted chuck (×) — lightly rest your fretting hand on the strings and strum; it creates a percussive 'chk' sound.
- 4Repeat each pattern for 2–4 bars before switching.
- 5Apply to power chords: E5, A5, D5, G5.
Tips & Techniques
- •The muted chuck is a rhythm tool — use it to fill gaps and add groove.
- •Accents on beat 2 and 4 give rock its backbeat feel. Dig in a little harder on those strums.
- •A common beginner mistake: stopping the arm on skips. Keep the pendulum going!
