Why It Matters
This exercise programs accurate spatial awareness into your picking hand. By jumping over intermediate strings, you train your hand to find strings instantly by feel, vastly improving your control, speed, and accuracy.
How to Practice
- 1Play two notes on string 6, skip string 5, play two notes on string 4, skip string 3, then play two notes on string 2.
- 2Reverse the pattern back down, maintaining a perfectly locked metronome pulse.
- 3Use strict alternate picking (down-up-down-up) throughout the exercise.
Tips & Techniques
- •Make a tiny, controlled upward arc with your pick to clear the skipped string cleanly.
- •Practice this slowly — hitting the skipped string is a sign of rushed or uncontrolled picking motion.
- •Keep your fretting hand relaxed and close to the fretboard to avoid extra string noise.
