Tone Matching Challenge
Listen to reference tones and adjust your attack and pickup selection to match them.
Why This Exercise Matters
Matching reference tones trains your ear to recognize subtle changes in dynamics, timbre, and equalization, helping you dial in the perfect sound on any gear.
How to Practice
- 1Choose any song you like.
- 2Select a specific fragment (riff, solo, or chord progression) to focus on.
- 3Listen closely to the guitar tone in that fragment. Analyze the level of gain, EQ balance, pickup selection, and effects.

- 5Play along with the recording and try to blend in seamlessly.
- 6Refine your settings until your tone is indistinguishable from the recording.
Tips & Techniques
